Why Can't High-voltage Disconnect Switches Be Used To Cut Off Load Current?
Date: | Read: 1
The primary function of a High Voltage Disconnect Switch disconnector is to isolate equipment or lines, ensuring no current flows during maintenance. Therefore, its contacts and electrical design do not take into account the arc-resistance required for interrupting load current. If operated under load current, the switch may fail to stably interrupt the current, leading to a persistent arc, which can damage the switchgear or even cause more serious electrical accidents. Therefore, high-voltage disconnectors cannot be used to interrupt load current.
