Visible Break: The Core Mechanism Of High-voltage Disconnecting Switch Isolation Voltage

Date: | Read: 3

The confidence of maintenance personnel in touching high-voltage equipment without fear stems from the clearly visible air gap after the High Voltage Disconnect Switch device is tripped. This break is not a simple "separation," but a meticulously designed insulation system. The high-voltage disconnector provides dual protection for maintenance safety—visually and electrically—by constructing a physical break, relying on atmospheric insulation, and employing a matching operating sequence.

Physical Construction of the Visible Break

After the high-voltage disconnector is tripped, the moving and stationary contacts completely disengage, forming a specified air insulation distance. For example, at the 10kV voltage level, the break distance must be greater than 160mm or the opening angle must be no less than 65 degrees. This clearly visible break point exposed to the air allows maintenance personnel to visually confirm that the circuit has been disconnected. The conductive parts use copper plate contact strips; when closing, clamping springs adjust the contact pressure, and when tripping, they completely separate, ensuring reliable isolation.

Collaborative Operation of the Insulation System

The post insulators of the high-voltage disconnector perform a dual task: supporting the weight of the conductor and withstanding the rated voltage and various overvoltages. The withstand voltage of the break-point insulation is designed to be 10% to 15% higher than the withstand voltage to ground to prevent break-point breakdown under any circumstances. The base is directly grounded, and together with the supporting porcelain insulator or bushing insulator, it forms double insulation protection from the live part to the ground. The high-voltage disconnecting switch has no arc-extinguishing device and can only be operated after the circuit breaker has disconnected the load current.
