The Physical Process Of Arc Generation In Fuse Contacts

At the instant the contacts of drop out fuse separate, the distance between the contact surfaces increases from zero to several millimeters. The current in the circuit does not immediately interrupt, creating a conductive plasma channel at the contact gap. The arc temperature can reach over 3000℃, causing the metal on the contact surface to melt and vaporize, and the copper or silver plating to be eroded, forming pits and burrs. The greater the load current, the higher the arc energy, and the more severe the contact burn-out.
