Lubrication failure is a common problem leading to decreased mechanical performance in the daily operation and maintenance of power equipment. The phenomenon of dry lubrication in high-voltage disconnect switches is often not accidental, but rather the result of the combined effects of long-term operating environment, lubricant aging, and inappropriate maintenance cycles. If not addressed promptly, it can lead to minor issues like jamming of the operating mechanism, or more serious problems like damage to transmission components or insulators during opening and closing, posing a potential threat to the stable operation of the power grid.

Main Causes of Dry Lubrication

The root causes of dry lubrication typically fall into the following categories:

  • Natural evaporation or loss of lubricant: Long-term exposure to high temperature, high humidity, or strong ultraviolet radiation can easily cause grease-based lubricants to oxidize and deteriorate, losing their adhesion.

  • Delayed maintenance cycles: The friction points of the operating mechanism should be regularly replenished with lubricating oil to maintain smooth operation and extend service life. If this is not followed, the lubricating layer will gradually be consumed.

  • Dust and contaminant intrusion: Metal dust, salt spray, or industrial exhaust gases in the operating environment adhere to the surface of the transmission mechanism, accelerating the degradation of the lubricating material.

Handling Methods and Lubricant Selection

If lubrication is found to be dry, follow the power outage maintenance procedures; do not attempt to handle the situation while the power is on. Inspect all transmission rods and mechanisms for rust, loosening, or detachment. Clean as necessary and apply molybdenum disulfide. Simultaneously, remove rust and repaint the base.

Pay special attention to the contact areas: Clean the contact surfaces of dirt and burn marks, and apply neutral petroleum jelly or conductive silicone grease to reduce contact oxidation.

The selection of lubricant is equally important. For transmission pins and connecting rod hinges, lithium molybdenum disulfide grease is recommended, as its pressure resistance and adhesion are superior to ordinary grease. For conductive contact surfaces, conductive silicone grease should be used, providing both lubrication and conductivity. After replenishing lubrication, manually operate the mechanism several times to verify transmission smoothness and record changes in operating torque for future reference in the equipment file.
