During the long-term operation of power systems, the sealing performance of equipment and environmental changes directly affect its operational status. When High Voltage Disconnect Switch equipment is used outdoors or in humid areas, water ingress and moisture are not uncommon. Such problems are often accompanied by fluctuations in insulation performance and aging of mechanical parts, which have a continuous impact on operational stability.

Common Causes of Water Ingress

High-voltage disconnect switches consist of conductive parts and insulating supports, making them highly susceptible to external environmental influences. Aging of the sealing structure, installation angle deviations, and housing cracks can all create seepage channels. Prolonged rainwater runoff or condensation caused by diurnal temperature variations can also lead to internal moisture accumulation.

Some typical situations include:

  • Aging and cracking of the sealing rings, allowing rainwater to seep in along the interfaces.

  • Insufficient protection in the terminal area, leading to localized water accumulation.

  • Incomplete enclosure sealing, allowing dust and moisture to intrude together.

  • Temperature variations causing internal condensation that adheres to the insulation surface.

The combined effect of these factors causes a continuous increase in internal humidity within the high-voltage disconnect switch, subsequently affecting the surface condition of the insulation components.

Impact on Operational Status

After water ingress and moisture absorption, the electrical characteristics and mechanical performance of the high-voltage disconnector will undergo multi-dimensional changes. A decrease in insulation resistance is the most obvious manifestation, especially when the humid environment persists. The superposition of dirt and water film reduces creepage distance utilization and increases the probability of partial discharge.

The mechanical structure is also affected. Metal contacts are prone to oxidation under humid conditions, leading to increased contact resistance and abnormal temperature rise after long-term operation. If moisture is present inside the operating mechanism, the lubrication condition changes significantly, reducing operational flexibility.
